Within this converted Church Meeting Hall residence, the clients commissioned Susan Van Meter Interiors to design the private first-floor spaces, creating a luxurious master suite that would complement the character of the home while reflecting their appreciation for colour, craftsmanship and bespoke design. Having previously completed designs for the home's library—where colourful painted shelving, bespoke joinery and vibrant printed sofa fabrics created a rich and characterful space—the brief for the master suite called for a more muted and refined interpretation of the same vision. While softer in tone, the design maintains the personality and individuality found throughout the home, using layered textures, carefully curated materials and subtle variations of green to create a sophisticated and restful retreat.

A Serene Master Bedroom

The design for the master suite began with the clients' existing bespoke rug, a cherished piece whose palette and character informed the overall scheme. The master bedroom was designed as a calming sanctuary, embracing gentle tones and natural materials. A delicate pale green chinoiserie wallpaper introduces subtle pattern and elegance, providing a beautiful backdrop to the room while reinforcing the project's enduring connection to nature-inspired hues. Original architectural features were respectfully retained, with the existing fireplace becoming a focal point within the room. Its character and craftsmanship anchor the space, balancing the contemporary bespoke elements with the home's heritage.

Bespoke Furniture & Cabinetry

Bespoke light oak furniture and cabinetry were carefully designed to maximise functionality while maintaining a sense of understated luxury. Textured finishes applied to the wardrobe doors add depth and tactile interest, elevating the joinery beyond simple storage solutions.

A thoughtfully integrated dressing area provides both practicality and sophistication, while a bespoke window seat creates a quiet corner for relaxation and enjoying views of the surrounding landscape.

A Bold and Beautiful Ensuite

In contrast to the bedroom's softer palette, the ensuite bathroom embraces the clients' love of colour with a more dramatic approach. Rich green marble slabs create a striking statement, introducing movement, depth and luxury throughout the space. The ensuite bathroom embraces the clients' love of colour with a bold yet sophisticated palette. Dramatic green marble slabs create a striking focal point, while proposed Tadelakt walls introduce depth, texture and a beautifully tactile finish. Dark oak flooring grounds the design, adding warmth and richness against the polished stone surfaces. A bespoke double vanity featuring Pyrolave green basins and elegant aged brass detailing provides a distinctive layer of refinement, balancing craftsmanship with contemporary luxury. The combination of natural materials, bespoke elements, and carefully considered finishes results in a bathroom that feels both indulgent and timeless.

The Power of Green

One of the most defining elements of this project is the thoughtful use of green in its many forms. From the colourful fabrics and painted joinery in the library to the soft chinoiserie wallpaper of the bedroom and the dramatic marble of the ensuite, variations of green flow throughout the home, creating a cohesive and harmonious design language. Each shade has been carefully considered to evoke a different mood—from vibrant and welcoming to serene and restorative—demonstrating how a single colour family can unite diverse spaces while maintaining individuality.
