Turning an unconventional space like a church meeting hall into a luxury home is a challenge few designers dare to take on. Susan Van Meter and her team are embarking on a new renovation in Clapham to create a stunning residence that blends history with modern elegance.

The Client's Brief

For the first stage of this project, the clients sought to transform their mezzanine into a vibrant yet refined retreat—one that would celebrate their passion for literature while respecting the original hall's architectural integrity. A strong sense of colour was essential to the brief, envisioned not as an overwhelming statement but as a carefully curated palette that would energize the space and highlight its unique character.

Integration

As avid readers, the clients required a dedicated area to house their extensive book collection. This called for bespoke shelving solutions that were both functional and visually striking, seamlessly integrated into the mezzanine’s structure. The design needed to balance accessibility with elegance, allowing the collection itself to become a central design feature. Particular attention was given to ensuring cohesion in colour throughout the room, allowing the palette to flow seamlessly across the mezzanine and into the surrounding hall, unifying the space while still celebrating distinct moments of contrast.

Using Colour to Unify

Susan Van Meter’s design stands out because of the unique features that reflect the homeowner’s choices. The client's love of colour is incorporated in the library joinery and furniture. Bold colour choices showcase the bookshelves and the Mah Jong Sofas. The rich textures, colours and bronze finishes create a sense of richness, texture, and luxury.

Lighting to Soften and Illuminate

The lighting design first supports reading and study. Soft, even illumination reduces eye strain, while focused task lighting within bookshelves makes it easier to see titles and read comfortably. It also plays a big role in highlighting the design elements; to emphasize the bold colour choices in the joinery and draw attention to the bookshelves, making them a visual focal point. Subtle integrated lighting (like LED strips within shelves) can add depth and make the space feel more curated. We integrated brass for floor lamps and wall sconces; it introduces a subtle layer of luxury without needing overly decorative elements.

Furniture To define Zones

Bold furniture also helps define zones and focal points. In a lounge, a striking piece can anchor a seating area and guide how people move through the space. It naturally becomes a gathering point without needing extra decoration. Bold, bright furniture can completely transform a lounge from something neutral into a space with personality and depth—if it’s handled with intention. Material contrast is another key element. Here we paired the bright upholstery with materials of brass and glass to balance the look and add a reflective element to the design.

Final Thoughts on the Transformation

Susan Van Meter’s work is a clear example of how to turn a Church Hall into a Home that combines history, luxury, and comfort. By respecting the architecture and adding thoughtful elements, the team created a Mezzanine design that feels both unique and welcoming and reflects the owner's lifestyle and style preferences.

If you're looking to renovate a unique space, this project offers inspiration and practical guidance. The key takeaway is that with the right vision and expertise, even the most unconventional spaces

can become extraordinary homes.

We look forward to hearing from you.
